In their first matchup of the season, it took Greenwich High School four overtimes before they notched the winning goal over Ridgefield. The two teams met up again in the FCIAC semifinals and this time, the Cardinals only needed one overtime to win the game.
The two teams entered the match evenly matched. Greenwich is the No. 2 seed in the FCIAC playoffs and ranked 12th in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings. Ridgefield, the No. 3 seed, ranks 24th nationally.
Greenwich fell behind early, when the Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first, and built it up to a 5-1 margin by the half.
Recuperating during the break, the Cardinals cut their deficit down to three at 6-3 by the end of the third. Then, Greenwich shutout Ridgefield in the fourth and netted a trio of goals to lock the game up at six and send it to overtime.
Kyle Foote, who dominated all game, stepped up to the occasion in the extra time. For his fourth goal of the game, Foote ripped a shot into the back of the net with just over two minutes left in the overtime.
Foote’s overtime winner gave Greenwich at 7-6 victory and propels the Cardinals into the finals to face Darien High School.
Darien, the No. 1 seed in the FCIAC, is undefeated thus far this season, ranking 5th in the nation. At 16-2, the Cardinals will have their work cut out for them, facing a Darien squad that beat them 10-4 earlier this season.
Greenwich will face its state rival on Friday May 30.
